By Neal Pierce and Curtis Johnson (Academy of Leadership, 1998). Neal Peirce and Curtis Johnson have written an important new report on community leadership for the 21st century. Published by The Academy of LeadershipPress at The University of Maryland, the Peirce-Johnson report is titled Boundary Crossers: Community Leadership for a Global Age. This report is the result of an 18-month project that compiled detailed leadership case studies of ten major metropolitan regions -Atlanta, Charlotte, Chattanooga, Cleveland, Denver, Detroit, Kansas City, Portland, San Antonio, and San Diego. The ten case studies have been published as a companion volume -- Boundary Crossers: Case Studies of How Ten of America's Metropolitan Regions Work.

The journal is concerned with extending and integrating the study and management of "nature's household" (ecology) and "humankind's household" (economics). Specific research areas covered include: valuation of natural resources, sustainable agriculture and development, ecologically integrated technology, integrated ecologic-economic modelling at scales from local to regional to global, and integrating natural resources and environmental services into national income and wealth accounts. New issues in ecological economics will find a ready forum in the journal.

Established in 1976 at the University of Maryland and now part of the School of Public Affairs, the Institute for Philosophy and Public Policy was founded to conduct research into the conceptual and normative questions underlying public policy formulation. This research is conducted cooperatively by philosophers, policymakers and analysts, and other experts both within and outside the government.

The IRTPCG was held in Washington, DC from April 19 to 21, 2001. Sponsored by The Democracy Collaborative, the meeting brought together leaders from universities, international agencies, civil society organizations, and the corporate sector from 12 countries. The Roundtable was the first part of an ongoing discussion aimed at creating new strategies for strengthening democracy worldwide.
