Make Your Next Vacation More Meaningful". Presenter: Neel
Inamdar |
| |
Wednesday
April 30th, 12-1pm, Symons Hall Room 0200 |
Ecotourism (or ecological tourism) is the environmentally-friendly
alternative to your next vacation. Generally speaking, ecotourism
focuses on volunteering, personal growth, and learning new
ways to live on the planet; typically involving travel to
destinations where flora, fauna, and cultural heritage are
the primary attractions. Responsible ecotourism includes
programs that minimize the negative aspects of conventional
tourism on the environment and enhance the cultural integrity
of local people.
About the presenters: Neel Inamdar is an Ecotourism Business
Advisor at Conservation International (CI). He has over 15
years of experience in owning and operating tourism facilities
and worked both in the non-profit and for-profit world. Before
coming to Washington, DC, Neel was the Ecotourism Business
Advisor at the African Conservation Centre in Nairobi, Kenya,
where he was responsible for developing and streamlining
CI’s engagement with the tourism industry to utilize
the value chain in support of conservation in CI’s
hot spot countries.

Movie: “An
Inconvenient truth” (USA,
2005) Directed by Davis Guggenheim. Moderator: Dan Kirk-Davidoff, Assistant Professor at the CMPS-Atmospheric & Oceanic Science Department |
| |
Monday,
October 15 at 7pm Hoff Theater, STAMP |
Humanity
is sitting on a ticking time bomb. If the vast majority of the
world's scientists are right, we have just ten years to avert
a major catastrophe that could send our entire planet into a
tail-spin of epic destruction involving extreme weather, floods,
droughts, epidemics and killer heat waves beyond anything we
have ever experienced.
If that sounds like a recipe for serious gloom and doom -- think
again. From director Davis Guggenheim comes the Sundance Film
Festival hit, AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH, which offers a passionate
and inspirational look at one man's fervent crusade to halt global
warming's deadly progress in its tracks by exposing the myths
and misconceptions that surround it. That man is former Vice
President Al Gore, who, in the wake of defeat in the 2000 election,
re-set the course of his life to focus on a last-ditch, all-out
effort to help save the planet from irrevocable change.

Movie: “Everything
Is Cool”(USA, 2007), Directed by Daniel B. Gold & Judith
Helfand |
| |
Monday,
September 24 at 7pm Hoff Theater, STAMP |
Everything’s
Cool is a “toxic comedy” about the most dangerous
chasm ever to emerge between scientific understanding and political
action – Global Warming. The good news: America finally
gets global warming; the chasm is closing and the debate is
over. The bad news: the United States, the country that will
determine the fate of the globe, must transform its fossil
fuel based economy fast, (like in a minute). While the industry
funded naysayers sing what just might be their swan song of
scientific doubt and deception, a group of self-appointed global
warming messengers are on a life or death quest to find the
iconic image, proper language, and points of leverage that
will help the public go from understanding the urgency of the
problem to creating the political will necessary to push for
a new energy economy. Hold on – this is bigger than changing
your light bulbs. (from website description)

Solar House Celebration |
| |
Tuesday,
September 11th from 11:30-12pm in the parking lot adjacent to the LEAFHouse construction site, east of the architecture school |
Before we pack up LEAFHouse for transport to the mall, we’d like you and your students to join us for a Solar House Celebration that will:
* Recognize the work of our Solar Decathlon Team and cheer them on their way
* Demonstrate the potential of solar power as an alternative energy source and encourage further learning and discussion about this topic (especially as it relates to “The Ravaging Tide,” by Mike Tidwell, our 2007-2008 First Year Book)
* Inspire students to join the 2009 Solar Decathlon Team
The event will coincide with a tour, led by President Mote, for the Maryland Senate Education, Health and Environmental Affairs Committee, chaired by Joan Carter Conway and Roy P. Dyson. Dr. Richard King from the Department of Energy and Director of the Solar Decathlon will also attend.
The event will consist of three brief student presentations about their work and the competition, and readings from “The Ravaging Tide.” Ice cream will be served, and a Testudo mascot and a small marching band are rumored to be coming. We will use a video camera and large-screen monitor to show attendees the inside of the house; at this late stage in construction, actual tours will not be permitted. A video crew from the Discovery Channel may also be on hand for the event.
Students can get involved with this event or with LEAFHouse in general. Students who'd like to join the effort may let us know by going to the Solar Decathlon Team website and submitting the form on that page. |
