Health Impact of Climate Change

"When the earth is sick and polluted, human health is impossible.... To heal ourselves we must heal our planet, and to heal our planet we must heal ourselves."
[Bobby McLeod, Koori activist, aboriginal]
Pentagon study: “Abrupt Climate Change” (pdf)
Commissioned by highly respected Defense Department planner Andrew Marshall, a Pentagon study raised the possibility that global warming could prove a greater risk to the world than terrorism. Among the potential consequences, if climate change occurs abruptly or at the high end of scenario projections, might be catastrophic droughts, famines and riots. The study's principal authors were Peter Schwartz, former head of planning for Shell Oil, and Doug Randall of the Global Business Network, a California think tank.

Maryland Newsline: "Global Warming Equals Post-nasal Drip?"
By SCOTT SHEWFELT, Capital News Service (April 12, 2007)

WASHINGTON - If you could stop rubbing your itchy, watery eyes for one second, put down the tissue and look around, you'd see an increasing number of sneezing, sniffling sad sacks just like you. Warm weather is sending more patients to Maryland allergists than ever before, but whether the weather is influenced by global warming is up in the air. Research has shown that ragweed pollinates heavier with higher carbon dioxide levels, said David Golden, professor of medicine at the Johns Hopkins University. And carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas, one of the culprits in global warming. Yet, Golden cautioned, people should be wary of trying to pin anything on global warming, he said. Maryland has had warmer temperatures in recent years, and "dryness and hot weather tell the plant it is time to shed pollen," said Edgar Moctezuma, professor of cell biology and molecular genetics at the University of Maryland, College Park.

Human society will face new risks and pressures due to climate change impact on the global environment. These include: food shortages and hunger, alteration of water resources, damage of physical infrastructure (particularly by sea-level rise and extreme weather events). Economic activities, human settlements, and human health will experience many direct and indirect effects. The poor and disadvantaged are the most vulnerable to the negative consequences of climate change.
Article: "Climate Change Is Hazardous To Your Health"
Paul R. Epstein and Evan Mills, Forbes (November 16, 2005)
Public attention has focused on the devastating aftermath and global dimensions of Hurricanes Katrina, Rita and Wilma, but climate change is already having a less conspicuous, but just as dangerous, impact on humans and the natural systems upon which we depend. Efficient use of energy coupled with alternative sources can help stabilize the climate.
